Voice Chat Not Working
Activision Call of Duty
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
If voice chat is not working in Call of Duty, the game either has the wrong microphone selected, voice chat is disabled in audio settings, or Windows is blocking microphone access to the game. Checking the in-game audio settings and Windows microphone permissions fixes it in most cases.
Affected Models
- Call of Duty: Warzone
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Common Causes
- Wrong input device selected in the game's audio settings
- Voice chat volume set to zero or voice chat feature disabled in settings
- Windows microphone privacy setting is blocking the game from using the mic
- Headset has a physical mute button that is switched on
- Push-to-talk is enabled but the keybind is not pressed
How to Fix It
-
In Call of Duty, go to Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and make sure Voice Chat is enabled and the Voice Chat Device is set to your headset, not Default or a wrong device.
This setting is separate from your Windows default microphone. If you recently plugged in a new headset, the game may still be pointing to the old device.
-
Check Windows microphone permissions. Go to Windows Settings > Privacy > Microphone and make sure microphone access is allowed for desktop apps.
Windows 10 and 11 have a privacy setting that can block individual apps from using the microphone. If it is off, no app — including Call of Duty — can access the mic.
-
Check if push-to-talk is enabled. In Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, look at the Voice Chat Mode setting — if it is Push to Talk, you must hold the assigned key or button to transmit.
New players often overlook the push-to-talk setting. Changing Voice Chat Mode to Open Mic means you transmit whenever you speak, without pressing a button.
-
Check the physical mute button on your headset. Most gaming headsets have a mute switch on the cable or ear cup.
A hardware mute bypasses all software settings — even if everything looks correct in Windows and in the game, a muted headset will not transmit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can other players hear me but I cannot hear them in Call of Duty?
That is an output (speaker) issue, not an input (microphone) issue. Check that the Voice Chat Output Device in Settings > Audio is set to your headset, not your monitor speakers or a different device.
Does crossplay affect voice chat in Call of Duty?
Yes — voice chat is only available within the same platform group by default. Crossplay voice chat between PC and console requires crossplay to be enabled in settings and all players to be in the same lobby.
