Connection Error / Unable to Summon

FromSoftware Elden Ring

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Connection errors in Elden Ring multiplayer are common due to the game's peer-to-peer networking. Unable to Summon means the co-op partner's session could not be joined. Both players should be in the same level range with matching multiplayer passwords.

Affected Models

  • PC (Steam)
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X/S

Common Causes

  • Summoning sign expired — another player already summoned them
  • Level difference too large without a password
  • NAT type too restrictive
  • Elden Ring servers overloaded
  • Boss already defeated in the summoning area
  • Cross-region play disabled

How to Fix It

  1. Set a multiplayer password for co-op with friends.

Multiplayer > Multiplayer Password. Both players must use the same password. This bypasses level restrictions.

  2. Enable Cross-Region Play.

System > Network > Cross-Region Play > Perform Matchmaking. This expands the player pool.

  3. Make sure the area boss is still alive.

You cannot summon co-op help in an area where you have already defeated the boss.

  4. Try again — summoning signs get claimed quickly.

Popular areas have many players competing for the same signs. Keep trying or use a password for direct co-op.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Elden Ring multiplayer so unreliable?

Elden Ring uses peer-to-peer connections rather than dedicated servers. This makes connections dependent on both players' internet quality and NAT types.

Can I play cross-platform?

No. Elden Ring does not support cross-platform multiplayer. PS4/PS5 can play together. Xbox One/Series can play together. PC is separate.
