Voice Chat Not Working
Epic Games Fortnite
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Check that voice chat is enabled: Fortnite Settings → Audio → Voice Chat → On. Make sure your microphone input device is correct: Settings → Audio → Voice Chat Input Device → select your headset. On consoles, party chat sometimes overrides game chat — switch to Game Chat in the party settings.
Affected Models
- Fortnite on PC (Windows)
- Fortnite on PlayStation 4 / 5
- Fortnite on Xbox One / Series X|S
- Fortnite on Nintendo Switch
Common Causes
- Voice chat disabled in Fortnite audio settings
- Wrong microphone selected as the input device
- Console party chat overriding Fortnite's game voice chat
- Microphone permission not granted to the Epic Games launcher on PC
- Push-to-talk enabled but the keybind not being pressed
How to Fix It
-
Enable voice chat in settings
Fortnite → Settings (gear icon) → Audio tab → Voice Chat → On. Also set Voice Chat Method to 'Open Mic' unless you prefer Push-to-Talk.
-
Select the correct input device
Settings → Audio → Voice Chat Input Device → choose your headset or microphone from the dropdown. 'Default' uses the Windows default, which may not be your headset.
-
Grant microphone permission on PC
Windows Settings → Privacy → Microphone → ensure 'Allow desktop apps to access your microphone' is On. The Epic Games launcher must have microphone access for Fortnite to use it.
-
Switch from Party Chat to Game Chat (console)
On PlayStation: in the Party screen, set Audio Output to 'Game Chat'. On Xbox: press the Xbox button → Party Chat → Audio → switch to Game Chat. Party chat mutes Fortnite's voice entirely.
-
Check Push-to-Talk keybind
If Push-to-Talk is enabled (Settings → Audio → Voice Chat Method → Push-to-Talk), you must hold the assigned key to speak. Default is V on PC. Check that the keybind has not been unset.
When to Call a Professional
Voice chat failures in Fortnite are always a settings issue. No account action is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Fortnite voice chat works but sounds robotic or choppy — why?
Audio compression on a poor connection causes choppy voice. Switch to Ethernet and check your ping. Also try reducing Voice Chat Volume in Settings → Audio.
Teammates can hear me but I can't hear them — Fortnite — how to fix?
Your output device is the issue, not your microphone. Settings → Audio → Voice Chat Output Device → select your headphones or speakers.
Fortnite voice chat works solo but not in squad — why?
A squad member may have you muted, or the squad leader's privacy settings block voice. Check the squad list — look for a mute icon next to names. Also check Settings → Audio → Voice Chat Channel → set to Squad.
