Bluetooth Not Working

Google Chromebook

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Click the clock in the bottom-right corner and toggle Bluetooth off, wait 5 seconds, then toggle it back on. If the device was previously paired, select it in Bluetooth settings and choose Forget, then pair it again from scratch. If Bluetooth fails to turn on at all, a full Chromebook restart usually resets the Bluetooth subsystem.

Affected Models

  • All Chromebook models with Bluetooth
  • Chromebooks paired with headphones, mice, keyboards, and speakers

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth subsystem entered a hung state after sleep or resume
  • Stale pairing data preventing reconnection after a device firmware update
  • The Bluetooth device is out of range or its battery is low
  • Interference from nearby Wi-Fi networks on the 2.4 GHz band
  • Chrome OS bug introduced by a recent update

How to Fix It

  1. Toggle Bluetooth off and back on. Click the system tray (clock) in the bottom-right corner, click the Bluetooth icon to turn it off, wait 5 seconds, then click again to turn it on.

This is the fastest fix for most Bluetooth connection issues — it resets the Bluetooth stack without restarting the Chromebook.

  2. Remove the existing pairing and pair from scratch. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, click the paired device, choose Forget, then put the Bluetooth device into pairing mode and pair again.

Stale pairings are a common cause of connection failures after the Bluetooth accessory receives a firmware update. A fresh pairing always uses the latest connection profile.

  3. Restart the Chromebook fully. Choose Shut Down from the system tray — do not just close the lid. Power back on and try pairing again.

Chromebook sleep/resume can leave Bluetooth in a broken state. A full restart reinitialises the Bluetooth hardware and driver.

  4. Move the Bluetooth device closer and remove potential interference sources. Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth share the same frequency band — a very busy Wi-Fi environment can cause connection drops.

If your router supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi, connect the Chromebook to the 5 GHz band to reduce interference with Bluetooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Chromebook Bluetooth turns on but no devices show up in the scan list — what to do?

Make sure the Bluetooth device is in pairing mode (usually indicated by a flashing LED). Devices already paired to another source may not be discoverable. Also try moving the device within 1 metre of the Chromebook — Bluetooth scanning range is limited.
