Hotspot Not Working / Can't Connect to Mobile Hotspot
Google Chromebook
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Chromebook failing to connect to a phone hotspot is usually caused by the hotspot being set to 5 GHz only (some older Chromebooks only support 2.4 GHz), or the hotspot password was entered incorrectly. Set your phone's hotspot to 2.4 GHz band and re-enter the password on the Chromebook.
Affected Models
- All Chromebook models — older models may only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
Common Causes
- Phone hotspot set to 5 GHz only — older Chromebooks support 2.4 GHz only
- Incorrect hotspot password entered on the Chromebook
- Chromebook saved old hotspot password from a previous session — needs to be forgotten and re-added
- Phone hotspot device limit reached — too many devices already connected
- Airplane mode or Wi-Fi disabled on the Chromebook
How to Fix It
-
Set the phone hotspot to 2.4 GHz.
On your phone, go to hotspot settings and look for a Band option. Select 2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz or Auto). 2.4 GHz has longer range and is more compatible with all Chromebook models. After changing, disable and re-enable the hotspot and reconnect the Chromebook.
-
Forget the hotspot network and reconnect.
On the Chromebook, click the system tray (bottom right) > Wi-Fi > click the hotspot network > Forget. Then turn on your phone's hotspot and reconnect on the Chromebook by selecting the network and entering the password fresh. Stale saved credentials frequently cause silent connection failures.
-
Re-enter the hotspot password carefully.
Hotspot passwords are case-sensitive and often contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. On your phone, go to hotspot settings and tap the eye icon to reveal the full password. Type it exactly on the Chromebook — do not copy-paste from a screenshot as some characters may be ambiguous.
-
Check the connected device limit on the phone.
Most phone hotspots have a maximum connected device limit (usually 5–10). If the limit is reached, the Chromebook will see the hotspot but fail to connect. On your phone, go to hotspot settings and disconnect any devices that are no longer needed.
-
Restart both the Chromebook Wi-Fi and the phone hotspot.
On the Chromebook, turn Wi-Fi off and back on in the system tray. On your phone, turn the hotspot off and back on. Wait 10 seconds and then connect the Chromebook to the hotspot. This clears any DHCP lease conflicts that prevent connection.
When to Call a Professional
Hotspot connectivity is a network and settings issue — no hardware repair is needed.
