Printer Not Working
Google Chromebook
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Chromebooks print using CUPS (built into Chrome OS) or via the printer's own app from the Play Store. Make sure the printer is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromebook. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Printers > Add a printer — Chrome OS will scan for printers automatically. For USB-connected printers, plug in the printer and Chrome OS should detect it automatically.
Affected Models
- All Chromebook models
- Chromebooks printing to Wi-Fi, USB, and network printers
Common Causes
- Printer and Chromebook on different Wi-Fi networks or one connected to 5 GHz and the other to 2.4 GHz
- Printer not added to Chrome OS — it must be configured in Settings
- The printer model requires a specific Chrome OS app or extension not yet installed
- Printer driver (IPP) not supported natively and requiring the manufacturer app
- Print job stuck in queue from a previous failed print attempt
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the printer and Chromebook are on the same Wi-Fi network. Many routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks — ensure both are on the same one.
Check the printer's network status page (usually printable by holding the info button) to see which Wi-Fi network it is connected to.
-
Add the printer in Settings. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Printers, click Add a printer, and wait for Chrome OS to scan. If the printer does not appear, click Add manually and enter its IP address.
The printer's IP address is shown on its settings page or network status printout. Most modern printers support IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) which Chrome OS uses natively.
-
Check the Google Play Store for your printer brand's app (HP Smart, Epson iPrint, Canon Print Service). Install it and add the printer through the app — this provides better compatibility for models not natively supported.
Manufacturer apps often provide more features than the built-in CUPS driver, including scanning and ink level monitoring.
-
Clear the print queue. If a previous print job is stuck, open the printer in Settings > Printers, select the stuck job, and cancel it before sending a new one.
A single stuck job blocks all subsequent prints to that printer. Cancelling it clears the queue and allows new jobs to process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chromebook work with all printers?
Most modern printers that support IPP Everywhere or Mopria print standards work with Chromebooks without extra drivers. Older printers that rely on Windows-only drivers may not work natively — check for a Chrome OS app from the manufacturer in the Play Store.
