Spinning Wheel / Frozen
Chromebook Laptop / Chromebook
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Chromebook frozen on a spinning wheel is either waiting for a slow page or app to load, running out of RAM from too many tabs, or has a software glitch. Close other tabs and apps first. If it does not respond, hold the Power button for 3 seconds to force a restart.
Affected Models
- HP Chromebook
- Lenovo Chromebook
- Acer Chromebook
- Asus Chromebook
- Samsung Chromebook
- Google Pixelbook
Common Causes
- Too many browser tabs consuming all available RAM
- A single webpage or app consuming excessive CPU or memory
- Chrome OS update running in the background
- Google Play or Android app frozen (on Chromebooks with Android support)
- Storage nearly full — slowing down the system
How to Fix It
-
Wait 60 seconds before taking action.
Chrome OS sometimes freezes briefly during heavy activity — loading a complex page, a background update, or a large download. Allow 60 seconds before assuming it is fully frozen. If any part of the screen responds to touch or mouse movement, the system is not completely frozen.
-
Close unnecessary tabs.
On entry-level Chromebooks with 4GB RAM, more than 10-15 open tabs can exhaust available memory. Press Ctrl+W to close the current tab without clicking. Alternatively, press the Overview key (F5 in the top row) to see all open windows and tabs and close the ones you do not need.
-
Open Task Manager and close the heavy process.
Press Search+Esc (or Launcher+Esc) to open the Chrome OS Task Manager. Look for any process showing very high memory or CPU percentage. Click it and select End Process. A frozen Chrome tab or a runaway Android app is often visible here.
-
Hard reset the Chromebook.
If the Chromebook does not respond at all to keyboard or trackpad input: hold the Power button for 3 seconds until the Chromebook shuts down. Wait 10 seconds, then press Power to restart. Unsaved work in the frozen tab will be lost, but Chrome OS remembers all your open tabs and offers to restore them on restart.
-
Check available storage.
Go to Settings > Device > Storage Management. If available storage is below 1GB, the system will run very slowly and freeze frequently. Delete downloaded files, clear cache in Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data, and uninstall unused Android apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Chromebook freeze every time I use Google Docs?
Google Docs freezing specifically on a Chromebook with limited RAM (4GB) usually means the document is large or has many images, combined with other tabs running simultaneously. Close all other tabs before working in Docs. Also go to Settings > Apps > Manage Android Preferences and disable Google Play if you are not using Android apps — this frees significant RAM on entry-level Chromebooks.
Will a Chromebook Powerwash fix freezing problems?
A Powerwash (factory reset) fixes freezing caused by corrupted app data or a problematic Chrome extension. It does not fix freezing caused by insufficient RAM or an aging battery. Before Powerwashing, try removing recently installed extensions (Settings > Extensions) and Android apps — these are the most common software causes of persistent freezing.
