Touch ID Not Working

Apple MacBook

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

MacBook Touch ID not working is usually caused by a wet or dirty finger, the sensor needing a clean, or macOS requiring a password after a restart or update before Touch ID activates. macOS requires the password to be entered at least once after boot before Touch ID is available — this is a deliberate security feature.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2016 and later)
  • MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (all models)

Common Causes

  • macOS requires password entry after restart before Touch ID is enabled — by design
  • Wet, damp, or very dry finger — fingerprint sensor cannot read the print
  • Sensor surface dirty — oil or residue on the Touch ID button surface
  • Finger not enrolled or enrolled print needs updating
  • Touch ID disabled in System Settings after a macOS update

How to Fix It

  1. Enter the password first after a restart.

After restarting, shutting down, or logging out, macOS always requires the password to be entered once before Touch ID will work. This is a security requirement. Enter your password, then Touch ID will work normally for subsequent unlocks.

  2. Dry your finger and clean the sensor.

A damp or greasy finger cannot be read reliably. Dry your finger completely. Also wipe the Touch ID button surface with a clean, dry microfibre cloth — oil from your finger builds up on the sensor over time and reduces accuracy.

  3. Confirm Touch ID is enabled in System Settings.

Go to System Settings → Touch ID & Password. Confirm that 'Use Touch ID for unlocking your Mac' and other options are enabled. After some macOS updates, these settings can be reset.

  4. Delete and re-enrol your fingerprints.

In System Settings → Touch ID & Password, remove all existing fingerprints by clicking the (x) on each one. Re-enrol your fingerprints slowly and carefully, pressing the sensor from multiple angles during setup for better recognition.

  5. Restart the MacBook.

A Touch ID sensor that suddenly stops working mid-session often recovers after a restart. The Secure Enclave (the chip that processes fingerprints) can sometimes need a fresh boot to restore normal function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Touch ID be used with all Apple apps and third-party apps?

Touch ID works for unlocking the Mac, Apple Pay, App Store purchases, and any third-party app that uses the macOS Local Authentication framework. Apps must individually support Touch ID — not all do.

Does Touch ID still work if I cut my finger?

A cut or scrape on the enrolled finger changes the print pattern enough to prevent recognition. Use another enrolled finger or your password until the skin heals. You can enrol up to five fingers on a MacBook.
