USB-C Not Working

Apple MacBook

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

MacBook USB-C port not working is usually caused by the SMC (System Management Controller) needing a reset, a dirty port, or a cable or accessory fault. Try a different USB-C cable and a different port first — if one port works and another does not, the SMC reset or a hardware fault is indicated.

Affected Models

  • MacBook Air (all USB-C and MagSafe models)
  • MacBook Pro (all models)
  • MacBook (2015–2019 USB-C only models)

Common Causes

  • SMC fault — System Management Controller manages USB-C power delivery and needs a reset
  • Port contaminated with debris or lint — physical blockage prevents cable from seating
  • Damaged USB-C cable or charger — the cable is faulty, not the MacBook port
  • Third-party accessory not compatible with the MacBook's USB-C power delivery profile
  • macOS update changed USB-C device compatibility — driver issue with a specific accessory

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different cable and a different USB-C port.

Before investigating the MacBook, test with a different cable and swap to a different USB-C port (MacBook Pro models have multiple). If one port works and another does not, the faulty port may need SMC reset or hardware repair.

  2. Clean the USB-C port.

Use a dry wooden toothpick or compressed air to remove lint and debris from the USB-C port. Lint prevents the connector from seating fully, blocking both power and data. This is the most common cause of intermittent USB-C charging issues on MacBooks used without cases.

  3. Reset the SMC.

For MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3): shut down, wait 30 seconds, restart — the SMC is integrated differently and resets automatically. For Intel MacBooks: shut down → hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds → release → power on normally. SMC reset often restores USB-C charging.

  4. Reset NVRAM / PRAM (Intel MacBooks only).

Restart the MacBook and immediately hold Command + Option + P + R for about 20 seconds until you hear the startup chime twice (older models) or the Apple logo appears and disappears twice. NVRAM stores USB-C port configuration data.

  5. Check System Information for USB-C device detection.

With an accessory plugged in, go to Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → USB. If the device appears in the USB tree, the port is detecting it — the issue may be a software or driver problem. If nothing appears, the connection is not being made.

When to Call a Professional

If the MacBook shows no response from any USB-C port with multiple known-good cables and accessories, the USB-C controller on the logic board may have failed. Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my MacBook only charge slowly on some USB-C chargers?

MacBook fast charging requires a charger that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) at the correct wattage for your model (e.g., 67W or 96W for MacBook Pro). Lower-wattage chargers charge more slowly or may only maintain charge while in use rather than charge the battery.

Can a USB-C hub damage a MacBook port?

A quality hub will not damage the port. However, low-quality or faulty USB-C hubs that do not implement Power Delivery correctly can cause the SMC to behave erratically. If USB-C issues started after using a hub, try without the hub to isolate the cause.
