Not Cleaning
KitchenAid Dishwasher
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
If your KitchenAid dishwasher is not cleaning well, check the spray arms for blocked holes and clean the filter. Blocked spray arms and a dirty filter are the two most common causes of poor wash results.
Affected Models
- KitchenAid Built-In Dishwasher
- KitchenAid Top Control Dishwasher
- KitchenAid Front Control Dishwasher
- KitchenAid KDTM Series Dishwasher
Common Causes
- Blocked spray arm jets — food particles or limescale
- Clogged filter basket reducing water pressure
- Incorrect rack loading — items blocking spray arm rotation
- Insufficient detergent or wrong detergent type
- Low rinse aid causing spots and poor drying
- Failing heating element — water not hot enough
How to Fix It
-
Clean the filter.
Remove the bottom rack and clean both the cylindrical and flat mesh filters under running water. A clogged filter restricts water flow through the spray arms.
-
Clear the spray arm holes.
Remove the lower and upper spray arms (unclip or unscrew them). Hold each arm under the tap and use a toothpick to clear every blocked jet. Check that the arms spin freely on their fittings when refitted.
-
Check loading and rack position.
Ensure the lower spray arm can complete a full rotation without any bowls, pots, or utensils blocking its path. Do not nest items — each piece needs water exposure on all sides.
-
Check detergent and rinse aid.
Use a name-brand dishwasher tablet or powder. Refill rinse aid if the indicator light is on. Increase the rinse aid dose setting if dishes have a white film or water spots.
When to Call a Professional
If the spray arms are clear and the filter is clean but dishes are consistently greasy or not fully clean, the heating element may be failing — have a technician check wash temperature.
