Aircraft Temperature Too High
DJI Drone
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Aircraft Temperature Too High means the drone's internal temperature has exceeded safe operating limits. Overheating can damage the battery, motors, or flight controller permanently. Land immediately and allow the drone to cool in the shade for at least 15 minutes.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Extended flight in direct sunlight on a hot day
- Flying in ambient temperatures above 40 degrees C (104 F)
- Motor running continuously at maximum power for extended periods
- Poor ventilation from flying in enclosed or hot environments
- Battery discharging too fast due to high power demand
How to Fix It
-
Land the drone immediately in a shaded area.
Do not continue flying — overheating can cause sudden motor failure or battery damage.
-
Power off the drone and remove the battery.
Removing the battery allows both the drone and battery to cool separately and faster.
-
Place the drone and battery in the shade for at least 15 minutes.
Do not place a hot battery in a case or bag — trapped heat makes overheating worse.
-
Check the battery for swelling before reinserting.
A hot battery that swells should not be used. Swelling indicates cell damage. See Battery Cell Damaged.
-
Avoid flying in peak heat hours (11am-3pm) in summer.
Plan flights for early morning or late afternoon in hot climates to avoid thermal issues.
When to Call a Professional
Overheating warnings that resolve after cooling require no professional help. If the drone overheats quickly even in cool conditions, have the cooling system inspected. Repeated overheating accelerates battery degradation and motor wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
What temperature is too hot for DJI drones?
DJI drones are rated for operating temperatures between -10C and 40C (14F to 104F). Above 40C the drone may overheat, especially during demanding maneuvers. Battery performance also drops significantly in very hot conditions.
Can flying in summer heat permanently damage my DJI drone?
Occasional overheating with proper cool-down periods does not usually cause permanent damage. Repeated overheating accelerates battery cell degradation and can cause motor bearing wear. Fly in cooler parts of the day and keep flight sessions under 15 minutes in extreme heat.
My drone overheated and the battery is now swollen — what do I do?
A swollen battery is a fire hazard and must not be used or charged. Place it in a fireproof container outdoors and contact DJI support. Swollen LiPo batteries should be disposed of at a certified battery recycling facility.
