Battery Cell Damaged

DJI Drone

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Battery Cell Damaged means one or more cells inside the battery pack have failed or are significantly imbalanced. A damaged battery cell is a fire and safety hazard. Do not fly with this battery — replace it immediately.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Avata 2

Common Causes

  • Battery over-discharged by fully depleting it
  • Battery stored for long periods at full or empty charge
  • Impact or crash damaging the battery physically
  • Charging with a third-party charger at wrong voltage
  • Battery has reached end of its service life (200-300 cycles)

How to Fix It

  1. Stop using the battery immediately.

A cell-damaged battery can swell, overheat, or fail mid-flight causing the drone to fall.

  2. Check the battery for physical swelling or heat.

A swollen LiPo battery is a fire hazard. If it is swollen, place it in a fireproof container outdoors and contact DJI.

  3. Discharge the battery to 30% before disposal if it is not swollen.

Partially discharged LiPo batteries are safer to dispose of. Use the battery with the drone on the ground (motors not running) to discharge.

  4. Dispose of the battery at a certified battery recycling facility.

LiPo batteries cannot go in regular trash. Best Buy, Home Depot, and many electronics stores accept LiPo batteries for recycling.

  5. Purchase a genuine DJI replacement battery and register it in the DJI Fly app.

Authentic DJI batteries have built-in management systems that track health and prevent over-discharge.

When to Call a Professional

A battery showing Cell Damaged must be retired — do not attempt to repair or fly with it. Purchase a genuine DJI replacement battery from an authorized retailer. Third-party batteries can have lower safety standards and are not recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a DJI battery be repaired if a cell is damaged?

No — DJI Intelligent Batteries are sealed units that cannot be repaired by users. Cell replacement requires professional battery service, which costs nearly as much as a new battery. Replacing with a new genuine battery is the only safe option.

How do I prevent battery cell damage?

Never fully discharge the battery — land when it reaches 20-25%. Store batteries at 40-60% charge, not fully charged or empty. Charge only with the official DJI charger and do not leave charging unattended.

Why did my battery get the Cell Damaged warning after a crash?

Crashes can physically deform the battery cells even without visible damage to the outer case. A physically damaged cell is unstable and must not be used. Inspect the battery case for any dents, cracks, or deformation after a crash.
