Camera Not Working

DJI Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A DJI camera that shows a black screen or refuses to record is usually caused by no SD card, a faulty SD card, or a loose camera ribbon cable after a hard landing. Insert a compatible SD card, restart the drone, and check the card format.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Air 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI FPV

Common Causes

  • No microSD card inserted — camera cannot record without storage
  • MicroSD card not formatted as exFAT, or corrupted file system
  • MicroSD card speed class too slow (requires Class 10 / UHS-I or faster)
  • Gimbal ribbon cable loose or damaged after impact
  • Camera firmware mismatch after a partial update
  • Moisture or debris on the camera lens or sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card and reformat it in the drone.

In the DJI Fly app go to Camera > Settings > Format SD Card. DJI recommends Class 10 or UHS-I cards. Slow cards cause recording to fail even if they appear to be working.

  2. Restart the drone and controller.

Power off both the drone and the remote controller completely. Wait 10 seconds and power them back on. A camera firmware glitch often clears with a full restart.

  3. Check that the camera lens is clean and free of moisture.

Condensation or smudges on the lens can cause poor image quality and in rare cases trigger camera errors. Wipe the lens gently with a microfibre cloth.

  4. Update DJI firmware via the DJI Fly app.

Outdated firmware can cause camera incompatibility issues. In the DJI Fly app, tap the ... menu > Firmware Update and install any available update.

  5. Inspect the gimbal for damage if the drone was recently crashed.

Remove the gimbal protector if fitted and visually inspect the ribbon cable at the base of the gimbal arm. Any visible kink, tear, or disconnect in the ribbon cable requires professional repair.

When to Call a Professional

If the camera shows errors after a crash — especially gimbal shake, a tilted image, or a permanent black screen — the gimbal ribbon cable or camera module may be physically damaged. Contact DJI Care or an authorised repair centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SD card speed does DJI require?

DJI recommends UHS-I Speed Grade 3 (U3) or higher for 4K video recording. Class 10 cards work for 1080p. Using a slow card causes dropped frames, recording errors, or silent recording failures.

Can DJI Mini drones record without an SD card?

Some DJI Mini models have internal storage (4-8 GB) that allows limited recording without a card. Check your model spec — DJI Mini 3 Pro has 2 GB internal storage, while Mini 2 has none.
