Controller Not Pairing

DJI Drone

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

DJI controller pairing fails when the drone is not in linking mode, the controller and drone firmware versions do not match, or the pairing sequence is not followed correctly. Put the drone in linking mode first, then initiate pairing from the controller.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Air 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI RC-N1
  • DJI RC 2

Common Causes

  • Drone not put into linking/pairing mode before attempting to pair the controller
  • Firmware version mismatch between drone and controller
  • Interference from other DJI drones or radio signals during pairing
  • Pairing button on drone not held long enough
  • Controller previously linked to a different drone and not reset

How to Fix It

  1. Put the drone into linking mode first, then start the pairing process on the controller.

Power on the drone. Locate the link/pairing button on the drone body (usually inside the battery compartment or near the micro-SD slot). Hold it for 3 seconds until the drone beeps and the status light flashes. Then initiate linking from the controller.

  2. Update both drone and controller firmware to the same version.

A firmware mismatch after an update on one device but not the other is a common pairing blocker. Connect each device to the DJI Fly app separately and install all available updates before re-pairing.

  3. Perform the pairing in an area with minimal radio interference.

Pair indoors away from Wi-Fi routers, other DJI controllers, and Bluetooth devices. Strong interference during the pairing sequence can prevent it from completing.

  4. Reset the controller to factory settings before re-pairing.

On most DJI controllers hold the power button for 9+ seconds to factory reset. This clears any previous drone link and allows a fresh pairing.

  5. Re-link using the DJI Fly app pairing wizard.

In the DJI Fly app tap the top-left icon > Control > Link Remote Controller. The app walks you through the pairing sequence step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one DJI controller pair with multiple drones?

Yes — a DJI controller can be linked to multiple drones, but only one at a time. You must re-pair whenever you switch between drones.

Why does my DJI RC-N1 keep disconnecting from the phone?

The RC-N1 connects to your phone via USB cable. Check the cable is fully inserted and undamaged. In the DJI Fly app go to Profile > About > Clear Cache — a corrupted app cache frequently causes RC-N1 connection drops.
