Battery Critically Low
DJI Drone
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Battery Critically Low means the drone battery has dropped to a dangerously low level. The drone will begin an automatic landing immediately to prevent a crash from battery failure. You can override the landing briefly to find a safer spot, but do not fly far.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Flight time exceeded available battery capacity
- Cold weather reducing battery performance significantly
- Battery aged and no longer holds full charge
- Flying in strong winds consuming more power than expected
- High-altitude or heavy payload increasing power draw
How to Fix It
-
Allow the drone to auto-land or guide it to a safe landing spot immediately.
You have only seconds to act. Guide the drone to clear ground away from people and obstacles.
-
Use the control stick to nudge the drone to a better landing position if needed.
You can override auto-land briefly by pushing the stick. Do not try to fly it back — there is not enough power.
-
After landing, power off the drone promptly.
Leaving a critically low battery connected while the motors spin out causes cell damage.
-
Check the battery health in the DJI Fly app after the flight.
Go to Battery Settings to see cell health and cycle count. A battery below 80% health should be retired.
When to Call a Professional
Battery Critically Low is a normal safety feature, not a malfunction. If your battery dies very quickly even when fully charged, the battery cells may be degraded. DJI Intelligent Batteries typically last 200-300 charge cycles before needing replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly longer in warm weather to avoid the critical battery warning?
Yes — battery performance improves in warm weather. In cold weather (below 15C), batteries lose 20-30% of their capacity. Warm the battery to room temperature before flying in cold conditions.
Why did the critical battery warning appear sooner than usual?
Battery aging, cold weather, or strong headwinds can all reduce flight time significantly. The drone calculates remaining flight time dynamically — a strong wind burns power much faster. Check battery health in the DJI Fly app and replace if health is below 80%.
What happens if the battery dies completely in the air?
If the battery dies mid-flight, the drone falls immediately with no control. This is why DJI forces an auto-landing at the critical level — to prevent this scenario. Never try to push past the critical warning.
