GPS Signal Weak
DJI Drone
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
GPS Signal Weak means the drone is receiving fewer GPS satellites than needed for stable positioning. With weak GPS, the drone may drift and cannot hold its position automatically. It may switch to ATTI (Attitude) mode where you must manually control position.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Flying in an urban canyon surrounded by tall buildings
- Heavy cloud cover or stormy weather blocking satellite signals
- Flying too close to large metal structures blocking GPS
- Not waiting for GPS lock before takeoff
- GPS antenna on the drone damaged or blocked
How to Fix It
-
Do not take off if fewer than 10 satellites are shown in the DJI Fly app.
Wait for the satellite count to reach at least 10 before taking off for stable GPS hold.
-
Move to a more open area away from tall buildings and structures.
Buildings block and reflect GPS signals. A clear view of the sky from all angles gives the best signal.
-
Wait 2-3 minutes after powering on for the drone to acquire satellites.
GPS lock improves over time as the drone learns the satellite positions. Patience prevents most GPS weak warnings.
-
If flying in ATTI mode, fly slowly and be ready to correct for drift.
In ATTI mode the drone does not hold position — it drifts with the wind. Keep it close and fly at low speed.
When to Call a Professional
GPS Signal Weak is usually an environmental issue, not a drone fault. If GPS is consistently weak even in open areas, the GPS antenna may be damaged. DJI repair can diagnose and replace the GPS module if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ATTI mode and is it safe to fly in?
ATTI (Attitude) mode means the drone stabilizes its tilt but does not hold position. It will drift with wind and requires constant pilot input to stay in place. Experienced pilots can fly in ATTI mode, but beginners should land and wait for GPS.
How many GPS satellites does DJI need for stable flight?
DJI recommends at least 10 satellites for reliable GPS Hold mode. Below 6-8 satellites, the app will warn of weak signal and may switch to ATTI mode. The satellite count is shown as a number next to the satellite icon in the DJI Fly app.
Does weather affect GPS on DJI drones?
Heavy rain, thick clouds, and storms can reduce GPS signal quality slightly. However, GPS satellites broadcast through most weather without major issues. Urban canyons and metal structures are a much bigger factor than weather.
