GPS Unavailable
DJI Drone
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
GPS Unavailable means the drone cannot receive any GPS signal at all. Without GPS, the drone cannot hold position, cannot Return to Home, and cannot use most intelligent flight modes. Only experienced pilots should fly in this condition, and only indoors or in a very controlled environment.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Flying indoors where GPS signals cannot penetrate
- Severe GPS jamming in the area
- GPS module damaged or disconnected from the flight controller
- Metal building or structure completely blocking all satellite signals
- GPS antenna connector loose after crash or disassembly
How to Fix It
-
Go outdoors to an open area if you are currently indoors.
GPS signals cannot pass through most buildings. Moving outdoors to an open area restores GPS in most cases.
-
Power cycle the drone and wait 3-5 minutes for GPS acquisition.
A fresh power cycle restarts the GPS receiver. Wait at least 3 minutes before checking the satellite count.
-
Check the DJI Fly app for the satellite icon and count.
Zero satellites means no GPS at all. Under 6 means weak signal. Both show as GPS Unavailable in some app versions.
-
Inspect the GPS antenna on top of the drone for damage.
The GPS antenna on most DJI drones is located on the top of the body. Check for cracks or dents from a crash.
-
If GPS is unavailable outdoors in open sky, contact DJI support.
A GPS module failure requires hardware repair. Do not fly until GPS is restored.
When to Call a Professional
If GPS is unavailable outdoors in an open area, the GPS hardware may be faulty. DJI repair can test and replace the GPS module. Do not fly without GPS unless you are an experienced pilot in a controlled indoor environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can DJI drones fly without GPS using Vision Positioning?
Yes — DJI drones with Vision Positioning Systems can hover indoors using downward-facing cameras. Vision Positioning works at low altitudes (below 10 meters) on textured surfaces. It does not work over water, in the dark, or on uniform surfaces like white floors.
Is it legal to fly without GPS?
Flying without GPS is legal in most places — GPS is a navigation aid, not a legal requirement. However, without GPS you cannot use geofencing, automatic RTH, or many safety features. Fly extra cautiously and stay within visual line of sight.
Why does my DJI drone show GPS Unavailable at a location I have flown before?
GPS jamming devices (sometimes used near airports or government buildings) can block all GPS signals. New structures or environmental changes can also block satellite angles. If the problem is consistent and outdoors, the GPS hardware should be tested.
