IMU Calibration Required

DJI Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

IMU Calibration Required means the drone's sensor data has drifted and needs to be recalibrated. This is a routine maintenance step — it does not mean anything is broken. Calibration takes about 10 minutes on a flat surface and clears the warning.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Neo

Common Causes

  • IMU sensors drifted over time from regular use
  • Temperature changes causing sensor offset
  • New firmware requiring a fresh calibration baseline
  • Drone powered on while tilted or moving
  • Long period of storage without calibration

How to Fix It

  1. Find a flat, stable surface such as a table or smooth floor indoors.

The surface must be level. Use a spirit level app on your phone to check if needed.

  2. Power on the drone and connect to the DJI Fly app.

Do not move the drone after powering on. Keep it still until the calibration starts.

  3. Open Safety Settings in the DJI Fly app and tap Calibrate IMU.

The app will show animations of each position the drone needs to be placed in.

  4. Place the drone in each position shown: flat, on each side, nose-down, and nose-up.

Hold the drone still in each position until the progress bar completes before moving to the next.

  5. Power off and restart the drone after calibration completes.

A restart applies the new calibration data. The warning should not appear after restart.

When to Call a Professional

IMU Calibration Required is routine maintenance and needs no professional help. The DJI Fly app guides you through the full process step by step. Contact DJI support only if calibration fails repeatedly — this can indicate a hardware issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to calibrate the IMU before every flight?

No — only calibrate when the DJI Fly app requests it. Over-calibrating is unnecessary and does not improve performance. Typically you calibrate the IMU a few times per year.

Can I calibrate the IMU outside on the ground?

You can, but a flat table indoors is better. Grass and uneven terrain make it hard to get the level surface the IMU calibration requires. A kitchen table or flat floor is ideal.

The calibration keeps failing at one position — what do I do?

Make sure the surface is truly level and the drone is perfectly still during that position. Also ensure no vibrations are occurring nearby (fans, washing machines, etc.). If it consistently fails, try a different location or contact DJI support.
