IMU Error
DJI Drone
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
IMU Error means the drone's Inertial Measurement Unit has detected a serious sensor problem. The IMU tracks the drone's orientation, acceleration, and movement — it is critical for stable flight. Land immediately if airborne. Do not fly until the IMU error is resolved.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- IMU calibration has drifted or is outdated
- Drone was powered on while moving or on an uneven surface
- Impact or crash damaged the IMU sensors
- Temperature extremes affecting sensor readings
- Firmware issue causing false IMU readings
How to Fix It
-
Land immediately and power off the drone.
An IMU error during flight is a critical emergency. Find a safe landing spot and land without delay.
-
Place the drone on a flat, stable, horizontal surface.
IMU calibration requires the drone to be perfectly level. Use a table or flat ground, not grass.
-
Power on the drone and open the DJI Fly app.
Do not move the drone after powering it on. The IMU needs a stable reference at startup.
-
Go to Safety Settings and tap Calibrate IMU.
Follow the on-screen instructions. The drone will ask you to place it in several orientations on a flat surface.
-
Allow the calibration to complete fully, then restart the drone.
IMU calibration takes 5-10 minutes. Do not interrupt it. A successful calibration clears the error.
When to Call a Professional
If IMU Error persists after calibration, the IMU module may be physically damaged. DJI repair centers can diagnose and replace IMU hardware for $80-$200 depending on the model. Never fly with an IMU error — the drone will not maintain stable hover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will IMU calibration fix the error every time?
Calibration fixes IMU errors caused by drift or improper startup in 90% of cases. If the error returns after calibration, the IMU hardware may be damaged. A crash or hard landing can physically knock the IMU sensors out of alignment.
Can I fly with a mild IMU warning instead of a full error?
A mild IMU warning means calibration is recommended but not yet critical. An IMU Error (not just a warning) means you should not fly. Always treat an IMU Error as a hard stop — no flight until resolved.
How long does DJI IMU calibration take?
IMU calibration typically takes 5-10 minutes. You will be asked to place the drone flat, on its side, and nose-down on a flat surface. Do not rush or skip positions — incomplete calibration can make the error worse.
