Obstacle Avoidance Unavailable

DJI Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Obstacle Avoidance Unavailable means the drone's collision detection sensors cannot function in the current conditions. This warning is common at night, over water, and in sport mode. Without obstacle avoidance, you must manually avoid all obstacles.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Avata 2

Common Causes

  • Sport mode is active (disables obstacle sensing for speed)
  • Low light or night conditions preventing vision sensors from working
  • Flying over water, glass, or uniform surfaces
  • Vision sensors dirty or obstructed
  • Obstacle avoidance manually disabled in settings

How to Fix It

  1. Check if Sport mode is active and switch to Normal mode.

Sport mode disables obstacle avoidance to allow maximum speed. The S/N switch on the controller toggles this.

  2. Clean all vision sensor windows with a microfiber cloth.

Dirty sensors are the most common fixable cause. Even light smudges can disable sensing.

  3. Enable obstacle avoidance in the DJI Fly app Safety settings.

Go to Safety and confirm that obstacle sensing is set to Bypass or Brake, not Off.

  4. If flying at night, plan your flight path carefully to avoid all obstacles manually.

Vision sensors simply cannot see in the dark. Fly slowly, at low altitude, and know your environment.

When to Call a Professional

Obstacle Avoidance Unavailable is most often an environmental limitation, not a fault. No professional help is needed in most cases. If sensors are damaged, DJI can repair or replace them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DJI Mini 3 Pro have obstacle avoidance?

Yes — the Mini 3 Pro has forward, backward, and downward obstacle sensing. It does not have side sensors, so lateral movements near obstacles are not protected. Fly slowly when near obstacles even with sensing enabled.

Can I enable obstacle avoidance while in Sport mode?

No — Sport mode permanently disables obstacle avoidance for safety reasons (at high speed, the sensors cannot react fast enough). Switch to Normal or Cine mode to re-enable obstacle sensing.

Is obstacle avoidance reliable enough to fly in tight spaces?

Obstacle avoidance is a safety aid, not a replacement for pilot skill. It can miss thin wires, fast-moving objects, and obstacles in poor lighting. Always fly conservatively in tight spaces regardless of whether sensing is active.
