Propeller Rotation Abnormal

DJI Drone

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Propeller Rotation Abnormal means one or more propellers are not spinning at the correct speed or smoothly. This can cause the drone to be unstable or unable to take off. Power off immediately and inspect all propellers and motors.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Avata 2

Common Causes

  • Propeller cracked or damaged
  • Propeller installed on wrong motor (CW vs CCW mismatch)
  • Motor bearing failing and causing uneven rotation
  • Debris caught in the propeller or motor shaft
  • Propeller not fully seated and locked onto the motor

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the drone and visually inspect every propeller.

Look for cracks, chips, or bends. Even a hairline crack is enough to cause dangerous vibration at flight speed.

  2. Check that each propeller is correctly matched to its motor.

CW (clockwise) propellers go on motors marked CW, and CCW on CCW. DJI color-codes or marks the props and arms.

  3. Press and click each propeller onto its motor hub firmly.

DJI quick-release props click into place. If they spin freely without clicking, they are not seated correctly.

  4. Replace any cracked or damaged propeller before flying.

Cracked propellers can shatter at full RPM. Never fly with a damaged prop — carry spare sets.

  5. Spin each motor by hand and listen for grinding or resistance.

Smooth, nearly silent rotation means the motor is good. Grinding or clicking indicates a motor bearing issue.

When to Call a Professional

Cracked propellers must be replaced — they are cheap ($10-$20 per set) and available from DJI. If the motor bearing is damaged, DJI repair or motor replacement is needed. Never fly with a cracked or improperly mounted propeller.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace DJI propellers?

Inspect propellers before every flight and replace if any damage is visible. As a general rule, replace after every 50 hours of flight time or after any hard landing. Propellers are cheap insurance — never compromise on them.

Can I use third-party propellers on my DJI drone?

Third-party props are available but using them may void your warranty. Non-DJI props may have different weight and aerodynamic profiles that affect stability. For best results and safety, use genuine DJI replacement propellers.

One of my propellers makes a buzzing sound in flight — is that abnormal?

A light buzzing can be normal at certain RPM ranges. A loud or changing buzz during flight indicates an imbalanced or damaged propeller. Land and inspect the propeller. An imbalanced prop causes vibration that can affect video quality and motor life.
