Return to Home Activated
DJI Drone
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Return to Home (RTH) means the drone is automatically flying back to where it took off. RTH is triggered by low battery, signal loss, or the pilot pressing the RTH button. The drone will climb to the RTH altitude, fly home, and land automatically.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Battery reached the low battery RTH threshold
- Remote controller signal was lost for 3+ seconds
- Pilot pressed the RTH button on the controller
- DJI Fly app triggered RTH from the screen button
- Geofence boundary reached
How to Fix It
-
Let the drone complete RTH if you are in a safe area.
RTH will land the drone automatically at the home point. Monitor for obstacles along the path.
-
Cancel RTH by pressing the RTH button again if you need to override.
Cancelling RTH returns control to you. Be ready to fly — the drone is in the position it was when RTH cancelled.
-
Use the control sticks to guide the drone around obstacles during RTH if needed.
You can move the drone horizontally with the sticks even during RTH. The drone will still fly home at RTH altitude.
-
If RTH is triggered by low battery, land as soon as safe — do not cancel and try to fly somewhere else.
Low battery RTH means you have little time. Guide it to the nearest safe landing spot.
When to Call a Professional
Return to Home is a normal safety feature, not an error. No professional help is needed. Only contact DJI if RTH fails to bring the drone back or lands in the wrong location.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RTH altitude and how do I set it?
RTH altitude is the height the drone climbs to before flying home. Set it high enough to clear all obstacles between the drone and home point. Go to Safety Settings in DJI Fly app and set RTH Altitude. Default is 30m — increase in hilly or built-up areas.
What if the home point is wrong and RTH lands in the wrong place?
The home point is set automatically at takeoff. If you moved between takeoff and now, the home point may be different from your current position. Cancel RTH and manually fly the drone back to your location. Always take off from where you intend to land.
Will RTH avoid obstacles automatically?
RTH uses obstacle sensing on drones that have it (Mavic 3, Air 2S, Mini 3 Pro). However, RTH primarily flies at the set RTH altitude to clear obstacles, rather than weaving around them. Always set RTH altitude higher than any obstacle between the drone and home.
