SD Card Error

DJI Drone

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

SD Card Error means the DJI camera cannot read or write to the memory card. The card may be incompatible, corrupted, or not fully inserted. Removing, cleaning, and reinserting the card fixes most SD card errors.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Phantom 4 Pro
  • DJI Avata 2

Common Causes

  • SD card not fully inserted into the slot
  • SD card file system corrupted
  • SD card speed class too low for 4K recording
  • SD card capacity too large (some drones limit to 2TB)
  • Dirty or bent contacts on the SD card

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the drone and remove the SD card.

Some DJI models have the SD card slot on the camera or body. Check your model's manual for the location.

  2. Clean the SD card contacts with a dry microfiber cloth.

Dust or fingerprints on the gold contacts can prevent reading. Clean gently.

  3. Reinsert the card firmly until it clicks.

A partially inserted card is the most common cause of SD errors. Push firmly until you feel/hear a click.

  4. Format the SD card in the DJI Fly app (Camera Settings > Format SD Card).

Format as exFAT for cards over 32GB. Formatting erases all data on the card — back up footage first.

  5. Try a different SD card if the error persists.

DJI recommends cards with at least V30 (Video Speed Class 30) rating. Use a Class 10 / U3 / V30 card or faster.

When to Call a Professional

SD Card Error is a self-fixable issue in almost all cases. No professional help is needed. If the SD card slot itself is damaged from improper insertion, DJI repair may be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SD card does DJI recommend?

DJI recommends SanDisk Extreme, SanDisk Extreme Pro, and Samsung Pro Endurance cards. For 4K recording, use a V30 speed class card or faster (U3 / A2). Check the DJI website for the recommended cards for your specific model.

Can I record to internal storage if the SD card has an error?

Some DJI models (like the Mavic 3 Pro and Avata 2) have internal storage you can use as a backup. Most DJI consumer drones only record to SD cards. Check your drone's specifications in the DJI Fly app settings.

Will formatting the SD card delete my footage permanently?

Yes — formatting erases all data on the card and this cannot be undone. Always transfer your footage to a computer before formatting. Some data recovery software can recover formatted footage, but success is not guaranteed.
