Video Transmission Error

DJI Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A DJI video transmission error means the live feed from the drone to your remote controller or phone is interrupted. Most commonly caused by wireless interference, distance, obstacles between drone and controller, or a phone that is struggling to decode the video stream.

Affected Models

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro
  • DJI Mini 3 Pro
  • DJI Air 3
  • DJI Air 2S
  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI FPV
  • DJI Avata 2

Common Causes

  • Radio frequency interference from nearby Wi-Fi networks, power lines, or other drones
  • Drone flown at too great a distance or behind obstacles blocking the signal path
  • Phone CPU overloaded — cannot decode the video stream fast enough
  • DJI app cache corrupted
  • USB cable between phone and controller faulty or loose
  • Antennas on the controller not positioned correctly
  • Outdated DJI firmware or app version

How to Fix It

  1. Check controller antenna position — angle them to point toward the drone.

The flat face of each antenna should point toward the aircraft, not the edge. Antennas pointed away from the drone dramatically reduce signal strength.

  2. Switch transmission channel in the DJI Fly app.

Go to Safety > Channel Selection > Manual, then select a less congested channel, or set it back to Auto. Auto mode scans and switches automatically, which often resolves interference without manual effort.

  3. Move to a location with fewer Wi-Fi networks and radio sources.

Fly away from densely built-up areas, large buildings, or places with many Wi-Fi routers nearby. Power lines and cell towers also interfere with OcuSync and O3 transmission.

  4. Reduce distance and line-of-sight obstacles.

Bring the drone closer and ensure you have a clear line of sight to it. Buildings, trees, and hills block the video signal even within the advertised range.

  5. Check or replace the USB cable connecting your phone to the controller.

A faulty or incompatible USB cable between the phone and the RC-N1 controller interrupts the video stream. Use the original DJI cable or a high-quality USB-C to Lightning/USB-C cable.

  6. Clear the DJI Fly app cache and update to the latest version.

In the DJI Fly app go to Profile > About > Clear Cache. Then check the app store for an update. App bugs and corrupted cache files frequently cause video feed issues that have nothing to do with the drone itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to fly when the video feed is unstable?

No. Land the drone immediately if the video feed cuts out. Without a live view you cannot see obstacles, other aircraft, or where the drone is heading. Use Return-to-Home if available.

Does flying in 5.8 GHz mode reduce video interference?

5.8 GHz is less crowded than 2.4 GHz in many locations, but has shorter range and is blocked more easily by obstacles. For open areas with congestion, 5.8 GHz can help. For distance flying, 2.4 GHz is usually better.
