Vision System Error
DJI Drone
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Vision System Error means one or more of the drone's visual sensors has a fault. This disables obstacle avoidance and visual positioning features. Cleaning the sensors and restarting the drone fixes most cases.
Affected Models
- DJI Mini 3 Pro
- DJI Mavic 3
- DJI Air 2S
- DJI Mini 4 Pro
- DJI Phantom 4 Pro
- DJI Avata 2
Common Causes
- Vision sensors dirty, smudged, or covered with debris
- Flying in conditions too dark for vision sensors to work
- Vision sensor scratched or physically damaged
- Flying over water, glass, or uniform surfaces that confuse sensors
- Firmware issue causing false vision sensor error
How to Fix It
-
Power off the drone and inspect all vision sensor windows.
DJI drones have forward, backward, downward, and sometimes upward sensors. They look like small lens windows.
-
Clean all sensor windows with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner.
Fingerprints, dust, and water spots all trigger vision errors. Clean gently in a circular motion.
-
Power on the drone and check if the error has cleared.
Most vision errors resolve after cleaning. The sensors run a self-check at every startup.
-
If flying at night or in low light, disable obstacle avoidance.
Vision sensors do not work in darkness. The app will warn you of this. Disable obstacle sensing in Safety settings when flying at night.
-
Update the firmware if the error appeared after a hardware change or impact.
Sometimes a firmware update recalibrates the vision system. Check for updates in the DJI Fly app.
When to Call a Professional
Clean the vision sensors first — this fixes the majority of vision errors. If the error persists after cleaning and restart, a sensor may be damaged. DJI repair can replace vision sensors for $100-$250 depending on the model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly with a Vision System Error?
Yes, but with reduced safety — obstacle avoidance and visual positioning will not work. Fly in GPS mode with extra caution and manually avoid obstacles. Do not fly near people or in tight spaces without obstacle sensing.
Why does Vision System Error appear only in winter?
Cold temperatures can temporarily affect sensor performance. Condensation from warm storage to cold outdoor conditions can fog sensor windows. Allow the drone to acclimatize for 10-15 minutes before flying in cold weather.
My drone flew into a tree because obstacle avoidance was off — how do I prevent this?
Always check that obstacle avoidance is enabled before flying near obstacles. The DJI Fly app shows the status of all safety systems on the main flight screen. Avoid flying indoors or near surfaces that disable vision sensing (water, glass, featureless walls).
