Camera Not Working

Ryze Tello Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Tello app shows a black screen or no video feed, the camera isn't streaming. This is almost always a connection issue between the app and the Tello, not a broken camera.

Affected Models

  • Ryze Tello
  • Ryze Tello EDU

Common Causes

  • App not fully connected to Tello Wi-Fi before launching video
  • App permissions not granted (camera/storage on the phone)
  • Tello app needs updating
  • Video stream initialisation glitch — fixed by restarting the app
  • Lens covered or dirty

How to Fix It

  1. Close and reopen the Tello app.

A simple app restart fixes the black screen in most cases. Make sure you are fully connected to the Tello Wi-Fi before reopening.

  2. Check app permissions on your phone.

The Tello app needs camera and storage permissions to show the video feed. Go to Phone Settings → Apps → Tello → Permissions and enable Camera and Storage.

  3. Check that the lens is unobstructed and clean.

The Tello's camera lens is small and easily fogged by condensation or fingerprints. Wipe gently with a microfibre cloth.

  4. Update the Tello app.

An outdated app can lose compatibility with the Tello's video stream format after a firmware update. Update via the App Store or Google Play.

  5. Power cycle the Tello.

Turn off, wait 10 seconds, power on again. Reconnect to its Wi-Fi and relaunch the app.
