Connection Lost
Ryze Tello Drone
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Connection Lost means the Tello's Wi-Fi link to your phone has dropped. The Tello hovers briefly then performs an auto-landing. Reconnect by closing and reopening the app or rejoining the Tello Wi-Fi network.
Affected Models
- Ryze Tello
- Ryze Tello EDU
Common Causes
- Flew out of Wi-Fi range (Tello's range is approximately 100m in open space)
- Phone's Wi-Fi auto-switched to a home/office network
- Phone screen locked and Wi-Fi reduced to low power
- Interference from other 2.4GHz devices (routers, Bluetooth)
- Tello battery dying mid-flight
How to Fix It
-
Stay within range — the Tello has a short Wi-Fi range.
Unlike camera drones, the Tello uses standard 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Effective range is typically 30–100m depending on obstacles and interference. Fly within visible range at all times.
-
Prevent your phone from switching Wi-Fi networks.
On Android: go to Wi-Fi settings → Tello network → disable "Switch to mobile data when Wi-Fi is poor." On iPhone: ensure Auto-Join is enabled for the Tello network and disable for nearby networks while flying.
-
Keep your phone screen on during flight.
When the screen locks, some phones reduce Wi-Fi power to save battery. Disable auto-lock in your phone settings before flying.
-
To reconnect: go to Wi-Fi settings → select Tello network → reopen app.
If the Tello auto-landed safely, power cycle it, reconnect to its Wi-Fi, and relaunch the app.
-
Fly away from crowded 2.4GHz environments.
In areas with many Wi-Fi routers (apartment blocks, offices), the 2.4GHz band is congested. Fly in open areas away from buildings for the best connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly the Tello with a game controller instead of a phone?
Yes — the Tello supports compatible Bluetooth game controllers paired with the Tello app. The Ryze Tello EDU can also be programmed using Scratch or Python, so the connection method is flexible.
