Not Taking Off

Ryze Tello Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Tello won't take off if it has low battery, is not connected to the app, has an IMU error, or detects a propeller problem. Check the Tello app for any warning messages before attempting takeoff.

Affected Models

  • Ryze Tello
  • Ryze Tello EDU
  • DJI Tello (same hardware)

Common Causes

  • Battery below 10% — Tello locks out takeoff at low battery
  • Not connected to phone via Wi-Fi
  • IMU not calibrated (especially after shipping)
  • Propeller not seated properly
  • High temperature warning blocking takeoff
  • App not up to date

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the Tello fully before first use.

The Tello comes partially charged. Charge to 100% using the Micro-USB port (Tello) or via the charging hub. The LED flashes while charging and turns solid when full.

  2. Connect your phone to the Tello's Wi-Fi.

The Tello creates its own Wi-Fi network (TELLO-XXXXXX). Go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings, connect to that network, then open the Tello app.

  3. Check for an IMU calibration prompt in the app.

New Tello drones often need IMU calibration out of the box. The app will prompt you — follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. Check that the propellers are properly installed.

The Tello has two clockwise (black dot) and two counter-clockwise (no dot) propellers. Each must click firmly onto its motor shaft. A loose prop will prevent takeoff.

  5. Place on a flat, level surface and restart.

Power off the Tello, place it on a flat surface, and power on again. The IMU reads the level reference at startup.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Tello's propellers spin but it won't lift — why?

If the props spin at low speed but the Tello doesn't lift, it may be in a throttle-locked state. In the Tello app, try pressing the emergency stop button and then re-arming. Also check that all 4 propellers are installed — the Tello will attempt to spin with 3 props but won't generate enough lift.
