Not Heating

Bosch Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Bosch dryers most often stop heating because of a failed heating element or a thermal cutoff tripped by a blocked exhaust vent. Clean the vent and filters first, then test the thermal cutoff.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Serie 2 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 4 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 6 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 8 Dryer
  • Bosch Condenser Dryer

Common Causes

  • Failed heating element (E17)
  • Tripped or failed thermal cutoff
  • Blocked exhaust vent or lint filter
  • Faulty NTC temperature sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint filter and exhaust duct.

Remove all lint from the filter and the full exhaust duct run to the outside. This is the most important first step — blocked airflow is the root cause in most cases.

  2. Test the thermal cutoff fuse.

Unplug the dryer and locate the thermal cutoff near the heating element housing inside the back panel. Test with a multimeter for continuity. Replace if it reads open.

  3. Test the heating element.

Test the heating coil for continuity. No continuity means the coil is broken and the element must be replaced. This is the most common hardware failure in Bosch dryers.

  4. Test the NTC temperature sensor.

Locate the NTC sensor on the exhaust duct or blower housing. Test its resistance at room temperature against the spec in your service manual. Replace if outside range.

When to Call a Professional

If the vent is clean, the thermal cutoff is new, and the element tests fine but the dryer still produces no heat, contact Bosch service — the fault may be in the control module.
