LG Dryer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

An LG dryer drum that will not spin is almost always caused by a broken drive belt. If the drum spins freely by hand with almost no resistance, the belt has snapped and needs replacing.

Affected Models

  • LG Electric Dryer
  • LG Gas Dryer
  • LG DLGX Series
  • LG DLEX Series
  • LG ThinQ Dryer

Common Causes

  • Broken drive belt (most common)
  • Worn or seized drum support rollers
  • Failed idler pulley that maintains belt tension
  • Motor failure
  • Foreign object jammed between drum and cabinet

How to Fix It

  1. Test the drum by hand.

Open the dryer door and try turning the drum manually. If it spins with almost no resistance, the drive belt is broken. A drum with an intact belt should have moderate resistance.

  2. Check for foreign objects.

Before disassembling, check the drum opening and door seal for trapped coins, buttons, or wires. Foreign objects can jam the drum without breaking the belt.

  3. Disassemble and replace the drive belt.

Unplug the dryer, remove the top panel, then the front panel, and lift the drum out. Route the new belt around the drum (ribs facing the drum), over the idler pulley, and around the motor shaft. Belts cost $10–$20.

  4. Inspect drum rollers and idler pulley while the drum is out.

Spin each drum roller by hand — they should turn freely and smoothly. A flat spot, cracked surface, or stiff roller means it needs replacement. A worn idler pulley will cause the belt to slip or break again soon.

When to Call a Professional

Replacing a drive belt requires removing the dryer's front or top panel and lifting the drum out. If you are not comfortable with this repair, an appliance technician can complete it in about one hour.
