Not Heating
Maytag Dryer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Most Maytag dryers stop heating because the thermal fuse has blown — a one-time safety device that trips when the dryer overheats due to a clogged vent. Fix the vent first, then replace the fuse.
Affected Models
- Maytag Electric Dryer
- Maytag Gas Dryer
- Maytag MED Series
- Maytag MGD Series
Common Causes
- Blown thermal fuse (most common cause)
- Clogged exhaust vent causing the fuse to blow
- Failed heating element (electric dryers)
- Faulty cycling thermostat
- Failed gas igniter or valve coils (gas dryers)
How to Fix It
-
Clean the exhaust vent.
Disconnect the vent hose from the back and clear all lint from the duct and the outside vent cap. This is the root cause in most no-heat cases — always do this first.
-
Test and replace the thermal fuse.
Unplug the dryer and locate the thermal fuse on the exhaust duct housing (small, white or black component with two wires). Test with a multimeter — no continuity means it has blown. Replace it with the correct part for your model number.
-
Test the heating element (electric dryers).
Inspect the heating coil for visible breaks. Test with a multimeter for continuity — no continuity means the coil has burned out and must be replaced.
-
Test the cycling thermostat.
Located on or near the blower housing. Test for continuity — if it reads open at room temperature, it has failed and must be replaced.
When to Call a Professional
If you have replaced the thermal fuse and cleaned the vent but the dryer still does not heat, a technician can test the heating element, thermostat, and gas components.
