No Tumble
Whirlpool Dryer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Whirlpool dryer drum that won't spin almost always has a broken drive belt. If the drum turns freely by hand with no resistance, the belt has snapped and needs replacing — a common repair on Whirlpool dryers.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool Electric Dryer
- Whirlpool Gas Dryer
- Whirlpool Cabrio Dryer
- Whirlpool WED Series
Common Causes
- Broken drive belt (most common — belts wear out over years of use)
- Worn flat drum support rollers
- Seized idler pulley
- Motor failure
- Foreign object jammed between drum and cabinet
How to Fix It
-
Test the drum manually.
Open the door and try spinning the drum by hand. A drum that spins with almost no resistance has a broken belt. A drum that is stiff or locked has an obstruction or a seized component.
-
Check for trapped foreign objects.
Look inside the drum and around the door seal for coins, buttons, bra underwires, or other items. These can jam the drum from inside or between the drum and the front bulkhead.
-
Replace the drive belt.
Remove the top panel and front panel, then lift the drum. Route the new belt around the drum (ribbed side against drum), over the idler pulley, and under the motor pulley. Whirlpool drive belts typically cost $10–$20.
-
Replace drum rollers and idler pulley at the same time.
Drum roller and idler pulley kits cost $15–$30 for Whirlpool models. Since the drum is already removed, replacing all wear parts together saves a future repeat disassembly.
When to Call a Professional
Replacing the drive belt requires disassembling the dryer cabinet to access the drum. An appliance technician can complete this repair in about one hour.
