Audible Not Working
Amazon Kindle
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Kindle Audible not playing is usually caused by the audiobook not being fully downloaded to the device, or the Audible and Kindle accounts not being linked. Open the Audible app settings on your phone and confirm both are connected to the same Amazon account.
Affected Models
- Kindle Paperwhite (8th gen and later with Bluetooth)
- Kindle Oasis (9th gen and later)
- Kindle Scribe
Common Causes
- Audible audiobook not downloaded — streaming requires Wi-Fi which disconnects in sleep mode
- Bluetooth headphones not paired or connected before starting playback
- Amazon and Audible accounts not linked
- Kindle model does not support Audible playback (models before 2016)
- Audiobook download corrupted — needs to be removed and re-downloaded
How to Fix It
-
Check your Kindle model supports Audible.
Audible playback via Bluetooth is only available on Kindle Paperwhite 8th generation (2016) and later, Kindle Oasis 9th generation and later, and Kindle Scribe. Older Kindle models cannot play Audible audiobooks. Check which model you have in Settings > Device Options > Device Info.
-
Download the audiobook to the device.
Tap and hold the Audible title in your library and select Download. Audiobooks must be downloaded locally — the Kindle does not stream Audible in the background. Downloading requires an active Wi-Fi connection and may take several minutes for longer books.
-
Pair Bluetooth headphones or a speaker.
Kindle cannot play audio through its speakers — it requires Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on. Put your headphones in pairing mode, then select them from the Kindle's Bluetooth device list.
-
Verify the Amazon and Audible accounts are linked.
Open the Audible app on your phone or visit audible.com. Confirm you are logged in with the same Amazon account as your Kindle. If the accounts are separate, audiobook licenses will not transfer to the Kindle.
-
Delete and re-download the audiobook.
Press and hold the audiobook title on the Kindle and select Remove from Device. Then tap the title again to download it fresh. This fixes corrupted download files that prevent playback.
When to Call a Professional
Audible playback issues on Kindle are almost always software or account configuration issues. Contact Amazon support if account linking does not resolve the problem.
