How to Fix It
-
Hold the power button for 40 seconds.
Do not release early. Count to 40 slowly. The screen may flash — release and wait for the Kindle to reboot.
-
If it freezes again: plug it in while restarting.
Having power connected during a restart ensures it does not die mid-boot.
-
Delete the book you were reading when it froze.
If it freezes every time you open a specific book, that file may be corrupt. Delete and re-download it.
-
Update the firmware.
Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Update Your Kindle. If grayed out, you already have the latest version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my books if I restart?
No. Your books are linked to your Amazon account. Bookmarks and reading progress are synced to the cloud.
Why does the 40-second hold work?
It forces the hardware to cut power to the processor, bypassing the frozen software. It is the equivalent of pulling the plug on a frozen computer.
