Kindle Parental Controls Locked — How to Fix It

What Does This Error Mean?

Kindle locked by parental controls means the Parental Controls PIN must be entered to access the device or settings. If you forgot the PIN, you must reset it through Amazon's account settings online — there is no offline bypass.

Common Causes

  • Parental Controls PIN forgotten by the account owner
  • Kindle For Kids profile locked by FreeTime PIN

  • Auto-lock triggered after multiple wrong PIN attempts

How to Fix It

  1. Enter your Parental Controls PIN.

    The Parental Controls PIN is set by the account owner — it is not the Kindle lock screen PIN. Try common PINs you may have set. The PIN is 4 digits and is separate from your Amazon account password.

  2. Reset the PIN via Amazon account settings (online).

    On a phone or computer, go to amazon.com > Account > Manage Content and Devices > Preferences > Parental Controls. From here you can change or reset the Parental Controls PIN after signing in with your Amazon password. The new PIN will be required on the Kindle the next time parental controls are accessed.

  3. Reset a Kindle FreeTime (Kids) profile.

    If this is a Kindle Kids Edition or FreeTime profile, the PIN is the parent dashboard password, not the regular Parental Controls PIN. Go to Amazon Parent Dashboard (parents.amazon.com) and log in to manage or reset the child profile settings.

  4. Factory reset as a last resort.

    If the Kindle is completely inaccessible and you cannot reset the PIN online, a factory reset will remove Parental Controls entirely. Hold the power button for 40 seconds to force a restart. Then go to Settings > Device Options > Reset (if accessible) or contact Amazon support for a remote reset. A factory reset removes all locally stored content.
