Slow Page Turns

Amazon Kindle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Kindle slow page turns are usually caused by a full internal storage, a book with heavy formatting or images, or the Kindle needing a restart to clear memory. Restart the Kindle and try the book with Page Refresh turned off.

Affected Models

  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Oasis
  • Kindle Basic
  • Kindle Scribe
  • All Kindle models

Common Causes

  • Page Refresh mode enabled — refreshes full e-ink display every page (slow but reduces ghosting)
  • Book with many images or complex formatting requires extra rendering time
  • Kindle storage nearly full — device has little space for rendering buffers
  • Kindle memory not cleared after extended use — restart required
  • Older Kindle hardware processing newer heavy ebook formats

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the Kindle.

Press and hold the power button for 7 seconds until the power screen appears, then select Restart. A restart clears the memory cache and often restores normal page turn speed immediately.

  2. Turn off Page Refresh.

Page Refresh does a full e-ink display refresh every page turn, which is slower but reduces ghosting. Open a book, tap the center, tap the Aa menu, then tap More > Page Refresh > Off. Page turns will be noticeably faster with Page Refresh off.

  3. Try the book in a different format.

Some heavy .mobi or .epub files with embedded fonts, images, and tables render slowly. If possible, download the book again from Amazon — sometimes the cloud version has been optimized. Remove the book from the device and re-download it.

  4. Free up storage.

If Kindle storage is nearly full (under 500MB free), rendering can slow down. Go to Manage Your Content on the Kindle or through Amazon's website and remove books you have finished. Books removed from the device stay in your Amazon cloud library and can be re-downloaded anytime.

  5. Check for a software update.

Go to Settings > Device Options > Update Your Kindle. Amazon regularly releases software updates that improve rendering performance. Install any available update and test page turn speed again.

When to Call a Professional

If all books are slow on a recently purchased Kindle, the device may have a hardware performance defect. Contact Amazon support for a replacement.
