Touchscreen Not Responding

Amazon Kindle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Kindle touchscreen not responding is usually caused by a frozen screen that needs a hard restart, or a screen protector interfering with touch input. Hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart.

Affected Models

  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Oasis
  • Kindle Basic
  • Kindle Scribe
  • All touch-screen Kindle models

Common Causes

  • Frozen firmware — screen image is visible but the system is unresponsive
  • Third-party screen protector reducing touch sensitivity
  • Liquid or moisture on the screen disrupting the capacitive touch layer
  • Kindle in sleep mode and power button not waking it
  • Physical damage to the touch digitizer from pressure or impact

How to Fix It

  1. Hard restart with the power button.

Press and hold the power button for 20–40 seconds. The Kindle screen may flicker or go blank — this is normal. Release the button and wait 30 seconds for the device to restart. This forces a restart even when the touchscreen is completely unresponsive.

  2. Remove the screen protector.

If you have a screen protector applied, remove it and test the touchscreen directly. Thick, incorrectly applied, or low-quality screen protectors reduce or eliminate touch sensitivity on e-ink Kindles. If the touchscreen works without the protector, replace it with a Kindle-specific thin protector.

  3. Dry the screen completely.

Moisture or condensation on the screen surface can confuse the capacitive touch layer. Wipe the screen dry with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use the Kindle in heavy rain or with wet hands.

  4. Charge the Kindle.

A critically low battery can cause the touchscreen controller to become unresponsive even while the display still shows an image. Plug in the charger and wait 15 minutes, then attempt the power button restart.

  5. Perform a factory reset.

If a restart does not restore touch response, perform a factory reset. Hold the power button for 40 seconds to force restart, then navigate to Settings > Device Options > Reset (using physical buttons if your model has them, or contact Amazon support). Note: a factory reset removes all locally stored books — they can be re-downloaded from your Amazon library.

When to Call a Professional

If the touchscreen is unresponsive to all touches after a factory reset, the touch digitizer has failed. Contact Amazon support.
