WiFi Connection Failed
Amazon Kindle
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
WiFi Connection Failed means the Kindle cannot connect to your wireless network. The password may be wrong, the signal too weak, or the Kindle only supports 2.4 GHz WiFi (on older models). Forget the network and reconnect.
Affected Models
- Kindle Paperwhite
- Kindle Oasis
- Kindle Scribe
- Kindle Basic
- All Kindle models
Common Causes
- Wrong WiFi password
- Kindle too far from the router
- Router on 5 GHz only — older Kindles need 2.4 GHz
- Too many devices on the network
- Network requires a captive portal (hotel/airport WiFi)
How to Fix It
-
Forget the network and reconnect with the correct password.
Settings > Wireless > tap the network > Forget. Then reconnect and enter the password carefully.
-
Move closer to the router.
Kindles have a relatively weak WiFi antenna. Being in the same room as the router ensures a strong signal.
-
Make sure your router has 2.4 GHz enabled.
Older Kindles only support 2.4 GHz. Newer models (Paperwhite 5+) support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
-
Restart the Kindle and router.
Turn both off, wait 30 seconds, turn the router on first, then the Kindle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need WiFi to read on a Kindle?
No. You only need WiFi to download new books and sync progress. Once a book is downloaded, you can read it completely offline.
Can I use the Kindle on hotel WiFi?
Sometimes. Hotel WiFi with a login page (captive portal) can be tricky. Open the Kindle's experimental browser to access the login page.
