Won't Charge

Amazon Kindle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kindle that will not charge usually has a bad cable, a dirty port, or a dead battery. Try a different cable first — this is the #1 cause. Clean the charging port with a toothpick if it looks dirty.

Affected Models

  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Oasis
  • Kindle Scribe
  • Kindle Basic
  • All Kindle models

Common Causes

  • USB cable damaged or charge-only (no data lines)
  • Charging port dirty with lint or debris
  • Wall adapter not providing enough power
  • Battery completely dead — needs extended charging
  • Charging port hardware failure

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different USB cable.

The most common cause. Use the original cable or a known-good one. Newer Kindles use USB-C, older ones use micro-USB.

  2. Clean the charging port.

Use a toothpick or compressed air to remove lint and dust. Pocket lint is a very common cause of charging failure.

  3. Plug into a wall adapter instead of a computer.

Computer USB ports may not provide enough power. Use a 5V 1A or 2A wall adapter.

  4. Leave it plugged in for 2+ hours if completely dead.

A deeply discharged battery needs extended charging before showing any signs of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Kindle take to fully charge?

About 3-4 hours from empty to full using a wall adapter. Charging from a computer USB port takes longer (6-8 hours).

Can I use a fast charger?

Kindles do not support fast charging. They charge at 5V regardless of the charger. A fast charger will not damage it — it just charges at normal speed.
