Won't Turn On / Blank Screen

Amazon Kindle

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kindle that will not turn on usually has a dead battery. Plug it in and charge for at least 30 minutes before trying to power it on. If it still will not respond, hold the power button for 40 seconds to force a restart.

Affected Models

  • Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Oasis
  • Kindle Scribe
  • Kindle Basic
  • All Kindle models

Common Causes

  • Battery completely drained
  • Firmware frozen — needs hard restart
  • Charging cable or adapter faulty
  • Battery degraded from age
  • Screen stuck on screensaver

How to Fix It

  1. Plug in and charge for at least 30 minutes.

A completely dead Kindle may not show any signs of life immediately. Leave it plugged in before trying anything else.

  2. Hold the power button for 40 seconds.

This forces a hard restart. The screen may flash or show the Kindle logo. Release after 40 seconds and wait for it to boot.

  3. Try a different USB cable and adapter.

The cable may be charge-only or damaged. Use the cable that came with the Kindle or a known data cable.

  4. If the screen shows a battery icon with an exclamation mark: charge longer.

This means the battery is critically low but the Kindle is alive. Charge for at least 1-2 hours.
