Frozen Screen / Unresponsive

Kobo E-reader

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A frozen Kobo screen means the software has crashed. Hold the power button for 15-20 seconds until the screen flashes. Release and wait for the device to reboot.

Affected Models

  • Kobo Libra 2
  • Kobo Clara 2E
  • Kobo Sage
  • Kobo Elipsa
  • All Kobo models

Common Causes

  • Software crash during book loading
  • Firmware bug
  • Large library causing memory issues
  • Corrupt ebook file
  • Low storage space

How to Fix It

  1. Hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.

The screen will flash black, then the Kobo logo appears. Wait for the home screen to load.

  2. If it freezes on a specific book: delete that book.

Connect to a computer via USB and remove the problematic file. It may be a corrupt EPUB or PDF.

  3. Check for firmware updates.

Settings > Device Information > Check for Updates. Firmware updates fix known freeze bugs.

  4. Free up storage space.

Remove books you have finished. Kobo performance degrades when storage is nearly full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my reading progress?

No. Kobo syncs reading progress to the cloud. After restarting, your bookmarks and position are preserved.

Why do EPUBs cause freezes?

Badly formatted EPUBs (especially DRM-free ones from various sources) can have rendering issues. Kobo's reader may crash trying to display complex layouts.
