Not Charging

Kobo E-Reader

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kobo that will not charge is most often caused by a faulty USB cable, the battery being in deep discharge mode, or debris in the charging port. Try a different cable and charger first — USB cables are the most common failure point.

Affected Models

  • Kobo Clara 2E
  • Kobo Clara Colour
  • Kobo Libra 2
  • Kobo Libra Colour
  • Kobo Sage
  • Kobo Elipsa 2E

Common Causes

  • Faulty or incompatible USB cable — most common cause
  • Debris in the micro-USB or USB-C port preventing contact
  • Battery in deep discharge — too flat to show charging indicator immediately
  • Charger/adapter not supplying enough current
  • Kobo firmware hung — device locked up and not responding to power input
  • Charging port hardware damage

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different USB cable and a different charger.

USB cables — especially thin phone cables — fail internally without visible damage. Use a quality cable known to work with other devices. Also try a different wall adapter: Kobo requires at least 5V/1A. A laptop USB port may not supply enough current.

  2. Clean the charging port.

Use a wooden toothpick to gently dislodge any lint or debris from the charging port. Hold the Kobo with the port facing down so debris falls out. Do not use metal tools or blow compressed air directly into the port at high pressure.

  3. Leave on charge for 30-60 minutes if the screen stays blank.

A deeply discharged Kobo will show a completely blank screen for up to 30 minutes before the charging indicator appears. Leave it connected and do not press any buttons. After 30-60 minutes, the charging symbol should appear.

  4. Perform a hard reset.

If the Kobo has frozen and is not responding to charging, hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen flashes or resets. Then connect to the charger and monitor for a charging indicator. A frozen Kobo will not charge correctly until it has been force-restarted.

  5. Contact Kobo support for port repair.

If none of the above steps work and the charging port shows visible damage (bent pins, loose connector), the charging port needs professional repair. Kobo devices are under 1-year warranty from purchase. Contact Kobo support at help.kobo.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Kobo take to charge from empty?

A fully discharged Kobo takes approximately 2-3 hours to charge fully using a 5V/1A adapter. Smaller adapter outputs (5V/0.5A from older USB ports) may take 4-5 hours. The charging LED or screen indicator shows when charging is complete.

My Kobo charges on some cables but not others — why?

Kobo devices are sensitive to cable quality. Cheap cables with thin internal wires drop voltage under load, meaning the Kobo does not receive enough current to charge. Use a cable with 24AWG or thicker data/power wires — quality USB cables specify the wire gauge on the packaging.
