Reading Position Not Saving / Bookmark Lost
Kobo E-reader
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Kobo reading position not saving is usually caused by Sync Reading Location being disabled, or the book being closed before the position could be written to storage. Enable sync in Kobo Settings → Reading and wait 3–5 seconds on a page before closing the book.
Affected Models
- Kobo Libra 2
- Kobo Clara 2E
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Elipsa 2E
- All Kobo e-reader models
Common Causes
- Sync Reading Location disabled in Kobo settings — the feature must be explicitly turned on
- Book closed too quickly — Kobo needs 2–3 seconds to write the current position to storage
- Battery dying mid-session — Kobo loses position if power cuts before the position is saved
- Same book open on multiple devices — whichever device syncs last overwrites the position
- Sideloaded book not tracked — position for sideloaded books may not sync across devices
How to Fix It
-
Enable Sync Reading Location.
Go to Kobo Settings → Reading → Sync Reading Location and turn it on. This feature is what saves your reading position to the Kobo cloud and syncs it across devices. Without this enabled, Kobo saves position locally but does not guarantee it is preserved after a restart or sync event.
-
Wait before closing the book.
After reading, pause for 3–5 seconds on the last page before pressing the power button or the back button. Kobo writes your reading position to the database in the background — closing the book immediately can miss the last-written position. This is especially important after long reading sessions.
-
Sync manually after reading.
From the home screen, tap the sync icon (circular arrows) after finishing a reading session. This pushes the current reading position to the Kobo cloud immediately. Manual syncing is the most reliable way to ensure your position is saved, especially on a device with intermittent Wi-Fi.
-
Check for position conflicts with other devices.
If you read the same book on a Kobo e-reader and the Kobo app on your phone, whichever device syncs last wins. If your phone app synced at a different position, opening the Kobo e-reader will jump to the phone's last position. Close the book on all other devices before opening it on the Kobo to avoid position conflicts.
-
Charge the Kobo before long reading sessions.
If the Kobo battery dies mid-session, the last reading position may not have been saved. Keep the battery above 20% during use — when the battery drops below 10%, Kobo may aggressively reduce background writes including position saves. If the device died and restarted, use the Go To feature (Aa menu → Go To Page) to navigate back to your last remembered page.
When to Call a Professional
If Kobo consistently loses reading position even with sync enabled and Wi-Fi connected, contact Kobo support — there may be a firmware issue affecting position saving on your specific model.
