Search Not Working / No Search Results
Kobo E-reader
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Kobo search not working is usually caused by the library index needing a refresh after a firmware update or a Wi-Fi issue preventing store searches. Restart the Kobo and wait 60 seconds for the library to re-index before searching again.
Affected Models
- Kobo Libra 2
- Kobo Clara 2E
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Elipsa 2E
- All Kobo e-reader models
Common Causes
- Library index not built after a firmware update — search index needs time to rebuild
- Wi-Fi disconnected for store search — Kobo store browsing requires internet access
- Search initiated too quickly after startup before the library has fully loaded
- Corrupted library database preventing the search engine from indexing books
- In-book search (searching text within a chapter) confused with library search — these are separate features
How to Fix It
-
Restart the Kobo and wait before searching.
Hold the power button and select Restart. After the Kobo restarts, wait 60–90 seconds on the home screen before tapping the search icon. The Kobo rebuilds its library index on startup — searching before it finishes returns incomplete or no results.
-
Check Wi-Fi for store search.
Searching the Kobo Store requires an active Wi-Fi connection. If you are searching for books to buy and see no results, check that Wi-Fi is connected (swipe down from the top of the screen). Library search (your downloaded books) works offline.
-
Sync the library to refresh the index.
Tap the sync icon (circular arrow) on the home screen to manually sync your library. Syncing downloads your full book list and rebuilds the search index. After syncing, wait 30 seconds and try the search again.
-
Try searching from the home screen.
Kobo has a search bar on the home screen that searches both your library and the store simultaneously. Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top of the home screen. Type a book title or author name and the results should show both owned books and store options.
-
Rebuild the library database.
Connect the Kobo to a computer via USB. On the Kobo storage, find and delete the file .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite (this is the library database — it will be rebuilt automatically on the next sync, but you will lose your reading progress and highlights if not backed up first). Safely eject the Kobo and let it sync — the database rebuilds from your Kobo account.
When to Call a Professional
If library search consistently returns nothing for books you can see on the shelf, contact Kobo support — the library database on your device may need to be rebuilt via a factory reset.
