Sideloaded Books Not Showing

Kobo E-reader

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Sideloaded books not appearing usually means they were placed in the wrong folder, are in an unsupported format, or the Kobo has not scanned for new files yet. Eject the Kobo safely and wait for it to process the new files.

Affected Models

  • Kobo Libra 2
  • Kobo Clara 2E
  • Kobo Sage
  • Kobo Elipsa
  • All Kobo models

Common Causes

  • Books placed in a subfolder the Kobo does not scan
  • Unsupported file format (.azw, .kfx)
  • USB cable disconnected before safe eject
  • Kobo still processing — needs time after ejecting
  • File is DRM-protected and locked to another platform

How to Fix It

  1. Place files directly in the root of the Kobo drive (not in subfolders).

When connected via USB, drag EPUB or PDF files to the top level of the Kobo drive. Avoid creating subfolders.

  2. Safely eject the Kobo before unplugging.

Right-click the Kobo drive > Eject (Windows) or drag to Trash (Mac). Unsafe removal can corrupt files.

  3. Wait 1-2 minutes after ejecting for the Kobo to process.

The Kobo scans for new files after disconnecting. The Processing Library screen appears — wait for it to finish.

  4. Check the file format.

Kobo supports: EPUB, PDF, MOBI, TXT, CBZ, CBR. Kindle formats (AZW, KFX) are NOT supported. Convert with Calibre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I organize books into folders on Kobo?

The Kobo scans the entire drive recursively. You can use folders for organization — the Kobo should find them. If not, move files to the root level.

How many books can a Kobo hold?

With 32GB storage, a Kobo holds roughly 15,000-20,000 ebooks. PDFs with images take more space than text-only EPUBs.
