Audible Not Working

Barnes & Noble Nook

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Audible on Nook requires the Audible app installed from the Nook app store or sideloaded — it is not built into the Nook reading app. If the Audible app is installed but not working, check that you are signed in to your Audible account and that the book has been downloaded for offline playback.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4
  • Nook GlowLight 4e
  • Nook GlowLight Plus 7.8
  • Nook Tablet 10.1
  • Nook Color

Common Causes

  • Audible app not installed — not pre-loaded on most Nook devices
  • Signed out of Audible account after a Nook software update
  • Audiobook not downloaded — streaming requires active Wi-Fi
  • Nook audio output set to silent or volume at zero
  • Outdated Audible app version incompatible with current Nook firmware

How to Fix It

  1. Install or update the Audible app.

Open the Nook home screen and go to the Shop or Apps section. Search for Audible and install it if it is not already present. If installed, check for an update — an outdated Audible app is a common cause of playback failures after Nook firmware updates.

  2. Sign in to your Audible account.

Open the Audible app and check whether you are still signed in. Nook software updates and factory resets can sign you out of third-party apps. Sign in with your Amazon credentials — Audible uses the same login as Amazon.

  3. Download the audiobook for offline playback.

In the Audible app, tap and hold the audiobook title and select Download. Audible requires an active internet connection to stream — if Wi-Fi is weak or unavailable, the book must be downloaded first. Downloaded books show a check mark and play without Wi-Fi.

  4. Check the Nook volume and audio output.

Use the volume buttons on the side of the Nook to raise the volume. If using Bluetooth headphones, ensure they are paired and connected before opening Audible. Nook devices route audio to the headphone jack or Bluetooth — confirm the correct output is active.

  5. Clear the Audible app cache.

Go to Nook Settings → Apps → Audible → Storage → Clear Cache. Then relaunch the Audible app and try playing a downloaded audiobook. If clearing cache does not help, uninstall and reinstall the Audible app to start with a clean installation.

When to Call a Professional

Audible is a third-party app on Nook devices. If the Audible app cannot be installed or crashes on launch despite reinstalling, contact Audible customer support — the issue may be account-level or regional.
