Frozen Screen

Barnes & Noble Nook

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A frozen Nook screen means the software has crashed. Hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart. If that does not work, try power + home button together.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4e
  • Nook GlowLight 4
  • Nook GlowLight Plus
  • All Nook models

Common Causes

  • Software crash
  • Corrupt ebook causing a freeze
  • Low storage space
  • Firmware bug
  • Low battery causing system instability

How to Fix It

  1. Hold the power button for 20 seconds.

The screen should flash and the Nook logo appear. Wait for it to fully reboot.

  2. If that fails: hold power + home (n button) for 20 seconds.

This is a deeper reset for models with a physical home button.

  3. Plug in during restart if battery is low.

A low battery can cause freezes. Having power ensures the restart completes.

  4. Update firmware after restarting.

Settings > Device Info > Software Updates. Updates fix known crash bugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my books?

No. Purchased books are linked to your B&N account. Sideloaded books on the device storage are preserved through a restart.

How often should I restart my Nook?

A restart every few weeks keeps the Nook running smoothly. If it starts getting sluggish, a restart often fixes it.
