Search Not Working / No Search Results

Barnes & Noble Nook

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Nook search not working is usually caused by a slow Wi-Fi connection (store search needs internet) or the Nook library index needing a refresh. Restart the Nook and try searching again — a restart re-indexes the library and often fixes empty search results.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4
  • Nook GlowLight 4e
  • Nook GlowLight Plus 7.8
  • Nook Tablet 10.1
  • All Nook e-reader models

Common Causes

  • Library index not updated — newly downloaded books may not appear in search immediately
  • No Wi-Fi connection for store searches — the Nook store search requires internet access
  • Nook keyboard not loading — touchscreen freeze prevents typing in the search bar
  • Search indexing corrupted after a firmware update
  • Full device storage preventing the search index from being rebuilt

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the Nook.

Hold the power button for 3 seconds and select Restart. A restart forces the Nook to re-index the library and clear any frozen search processes. After restarting, wait 60 seconds for the library to fully load before trying to search.

  2. Check Wi-Fi for store searches.

Nook store search and book recommendations require an active Wi-Fi connection. Library search (your downloaded books) works offline, but store browsing does not. If searching the store returns no results, verify Wi-Fi is connected and try again.

  3. Sync your library to update the index.

Go to Nook Settings → Account → Sync Library. Syncing re-downloads the full list of your purchased books and rebuilds the search index. Newly purchased books that do not appear in search usually appear correctly after a manual sync.

  4. Try searching from the home screen search bar.

The Nook has a search bar on the home screen and a separate search within the library view. If search in one location is not working, try the other. From the home screen, tap the magnifying glass icon — this searches both your library and the store simultaneously.

  5. Free up storage space.

Go to Nook Settings → Device Info → Storage. If available storage is below 500 MB, the Nook may not be able to rebuild the search index. Delete downloaded books you have already read or move them to an SD card if your Nook model supports it.
