WiFi Not Connecting

Nook E-Reader

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Nook WiFi problems are usually caused by the router using 5GHz only (Nook requires 2.4GHz), an incorrect WiFi password, or a firmware issue that a restart clears. Ensure your router has a 2.4GHz network available.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4
  • Nook GlowLight 4e
  • Nook GlowLight 4 Plus
  • Nook Tablet

Common Causes

  • Router set to 5GHz only — Nook connects to 2.4GHz only
  • Incorrect WiFi password entered
  • Router using WPA3 security — some Nook models require WPA2
  • Nook too far from the router — weak signal
  • Firmware bug causing the WiFi radio to lock up — cleared by restart

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm your router has a 2.4GHz network available.

Nook e-readers connect to 2.4GHz WiFi only. If your router has band steering enabled (combining 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one SSID), the Nook should connect to 2.4GHz automatically. If your router is set to 5GHz only mode, enable 2.4GHz in the router settings.

  2. Re-enter the WiFi password on the Nook.

Go to Settings > Wireless > WiFi. Tap the network name and select Forget. Then tap the network again and carefully re-enter the password — WiFi passwords are case-sensitive. An incorrect password is a common cause of Nook WiFi failures that look like a hardware problem.

  3. Restart the Nook.

Hold the power button for 5 seconds and select Power Off. Wait 30 seconds, then power on. A WiFi radio lock-up — where the Nook reports connected but has no actual connection — clears on restart.

  4. Move the Nook closer to the router.

Nook e-readers have modest WiFi antennas. For initial setup, bring the Nook within 5-10 feet of the router to ensure a strong signal. Once connected, the Nook can maintain connection at greater distances.

  5. Set router security to WPA2 if using WPA3.

Older Nook models do not support WPA3 WiFi security. If your router is set to WPA3 only, change it to WPA2/WPA3 compatibility mode or WPA2 only. This setting is in your router's wireless security settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Nook say connected to WiFi but cannot open the store?

Connected WiFi with no store access means the Nook has a local network connection but cannot reach Barnes & Noble's servers. This can be caused by a firewall rule on your router, a DNS issue, or a temporary B&N server outage. Try on a different network (mobile hotspot) to rule out your router as the cause.

Does Nook work without WiFi?

Yes — books already downloaded to the Nook can be read without WiFi. You only need WiFi to purchase and download new books, sync your library, or update firmware. All reading functions work fully offline.
