App Not Connecting
Various Electric Bike
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
E-bike app not connecting to the bike over Bluetooth is usually caused by the bike not being powered on, a stale Bluetooth pairing on the phone, or the app needing an update. The bike's motor and assist functions work normally without the app — the app only provides settings, trip data, and firmware updates.
Affected Models
- Rad Power Bikes (RadExpand, RadRover)
- Aventon (Level, Soltera)
- Lectric XP series
- Giant e-bikes
- Specialized Turbo series
Common Causes
- Bike not powered on — Bluetooth is only active when the bike is turned on
- Phone Bluetooth is off or in airplane mode
- Stale pairing — the bike is already paired to the phone but needs to be re-paired
- App needs to be updated — older app versions cannot connect after a firmware update on the bike
- Phone is out of Bluetooth range — effective range is typically 5–10 metres
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the bike is powered on.
The e-bike's Bluetooth module is only active when the bike is turned on. Power on the bike using the power button on the display and make sure the display is lit before attempting to connect.
-
Toggle Bluetooth off and on on the phone.
Open phone Settings → Bluetooth, turn it off, wait 5 seconds, turn it back on. This clears any stuck connection state in the phone's Bluetooth stack.
-
Delete the old bike pairing from the phone.
In phone Settings → Bluetooth, find the e-bike in the 'My Devices' or 'Paired Devices' list. Tap the (i) or gear icon next to it and select 'Forget This Device'. Then open the app and pair fresh.
-
Update the companion app.
Open the App Store or Google Play Store and check for an update to your e-bike app. After a bike firmware update, the app must also be updated to match. Mismatched versions prevent connection.
-
Force-close the app and reopen it.
On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and swipe the app off the screen. On Android, open recent apps and close it. Reopen the app from scratch — a crashed background process can block new connections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the e-bike still work without the app?
Yes. All motor assist levels, display functions, and safety features work normally without the app. The app is used for adjusting settings, viewing trip statistics, and installing firmware updates — it is not required for riding.
Why does my e-bike app say 'searching' but never finds the bike?
Most commonly the bike is not powered on, or the phone's location permissions for the app are disabled. Many Bluetooth scanning apps on Android require location permission to scan for nearby devices — check app permissions in Settings.
